What Type of Batteries are Best for UAV LiDAR Surveys?

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of applications, from photography to surveying. To power these drones, electrical energy is typically supplied by lithium polymer (Li-Po) batteries. These batteries have a high energy density and a high power density, making them ideal for powering UAVs. The Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) recently wanted to compare UAV LiDAR surveys with those carried out with traditional methods in a real-world situation.

LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging and is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light pulses to measure distances and create 3D models of the environment. UAV LiDAR surveys are becoming increasingly popular for surveying applications due to their accuracy and cost-effectiveness. Li-Po batteries are the most popular power source for commercial UAVs currently on the market. They are lightweight, have a long life span, and can be recharged quickly. Additionally, they are relatively inexpensive compared to other types of batteries.

However, they do have some drawbacks. For example, they can be dangerous if not handled properly and can be damaged if overcharged or discharged too quickly. In addition to Li-Po batteries, other types of batteries can also be used to power UAVs. Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are another popular option due to their low cost and long life span. However, they are heavier than Li-Po batteries and take longer to charge.

Lead acid batteries are also an option but they are much heavier than Li-Po or NiMH batteries and have a shorter life span. When selecting the right type of battery for your UAV LiDAR survey, it is important to consider the weight of the battery, its life span, its cost, and its safety features. Li-Po batteries are the most popular choice due to their lightweight design, long life span, and relatively low cost. However, depending on your specific needs, other types of batteries may be more suitable.
